The first Tate Gallery opened in 1897 at Millbank London. Despite its official title as the National Gallery of British Art, its was popularly referred to by its founders name Sir Henry Tate and became known as Tate Gallery London. Initially with a collection of 19th Century British modern art its collection has extended to encapsulate the national collection of International modern art as well as British art from 1500 onwards. To house this large collection it has evolved into a family of four Tate galleries: Tate Britain & Tate Modern London, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. The Tate now ranks as one of the great museums of Britain with its national collections of British art and international modern & contemporary art.
